1.0 PERSONAL TRAINING THE PC WAY

You've probably used the Internet to shop, to find a hotel, to plan an evening's entertainment, and, of course, for reference. But have you used it to learn a skill or a problem-solving technique?

In addition to the fee-based distance learning courses offered by major institutions, there are also several good sources of FREE tutorials, guides, and instructional ezines. WannaLearn.com and Findtutorials.com both offer searchable directories of tutorials, guides, and instruction websites ranging covering academic topics, hobbies, finances, fine arts, careers, and more.

Ahem... In the interest of full disclosure, we must admit that one of our own better tutorials -- How to Stop Smoking -- is included in both directories.

2.0 VIRUS ALERT OR FALSE ALARM: HOW TO TELL

Pat yourself on the back if you've never forwarded a computer virus alert before taking the time to verify it. That's what we do, and we've yet to forward our first alert!

To check out an alert, use the HoaxBuster site produced by the U.S. Department of Energy's CIAC service. (CIAC stands for Computer Incident Advisory Capability -- don't you love the name?) It tracks hoaxes and other computer scams.

Then check the virus database of a reputable anti-virus software maker, like McAfee Corporation.

Don't have the time to check the alert? Then consider this. Do you really think Microsoft, Apple, AOL, etc. decided not to publish the alert on their websites, by email, or in press releases because they're counting on you to spread the word by telling a few of your friends? Really?

For the skinny on preventing, detecting, and removing viruses, read our own PC Tip on Viruses.

3.0 LOOKSMART'S FREE NEWS ARCHIVE SEARCHES

Nowhere is the power of the computer more evident than in a search engine's ability to index and retrieve information from literally billions of Internet websites. Now that power is harnessed again to make finding old news easy and cheap!

A new service, FINDarticles.com from LookSmart lets you search magazines and periodicals online and retrieve full-text articles. This free service covers about 300 sources going back to 1998. In contrast, Northern Light covers 7000 sources, most back to 1995, but charges $1-4 per article.

6.0 MAKING OLD PROGRAMS RUN UNDER NEW WINDOWS

One of the nice things about Windows is that Microsoft makes a serious effort to maintain backward compatibility. That means Windows 98 Second Edition works with programs written for Windows 95 and Windows 3.0 and DOS -- more or less. But sometimes the 16-bit programs written for Windows 3.0, 3.1, and 3.11, don't work properly with 32-bit Windows 95 and 98 and become candidates for the dustbin.

Before you replace that familiar favorite, try this. From Start select Run, type in MKCOMPAT and then click OK. Hidden in Windows 9X is piece of software called Make Compatible, which will allow you to tell Windows how to handle that old, non- compliant 16-bit Windows 3X application. Some of the options are a bit technical, but most are self-explanatory. Tweak and try, but don't call your software maker for help. He wants to sell you new goodies, don't you know?

7.0 UNCOVERING THE HIDDEN FAX IN WINDOWS 98

Windows 3.11 for WorkGroups introduced At Work Fax, which became Microsoft Fax in Windows 95. And then came Windows 98 and -- oops -- no fax software! But not to worry, Microsoft Fax comes with Windows 98, it just requires a little sleuthing to find it.

The version of Microsoft Fax in Windows 98 is the same as that previously distributed with '95. On the '98 CD-ROM, you can get it by running AWFAX.EXE from the Tools\OldWin95\Messaging directory. But be forewarned: "Microsoft Fax requires a Full MAPI Client in order to function, such as: Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, Microsoft Exchange Server Client or Outlook 97." Outlook Express and Eudora are also MAPI clients.

If your installation of Windows 98 doesn't already include a MAPI client, you can run WMS.EXE -- from the same directory -- to install Windows Messaging Service.

8.0 NEW SEARCH ENGINE INDEXES PDF DOCUMENTS

Many interesting documents, from instruction manuals to annual reports, to government agency publications, are available on the Internet, but only in Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) -- which search engines ignore. Now the company that created the format, Adobe, has put together a search engine which finds PDF documents, providing summaries with links for downloading and viewing.

9.0 GET ORGANIZED WITH TO-DO LIST SOFTWARE

The experts agree: The single most powerful tool for managing your personal or business affairs is the lowly to-do list. While the Luddites among us continue to make and manage their to-do lists using paper and pencil, PC users can now make theirs with a simple, but elegant piece of software by David Lehman from Angstrom Software.

To-Do List does just one thing. It manages your list quickly and easily with no unneeded features, advertising, or complex equations. And it's on your PC, so it's completely confidential.

There's a free version that may be all you need, and an almost free ($15) shareware version that adds pop-up reminders, multiple to-do lists, enhanced printing, etc. Add getting this to your to-do list for today!

10.0 INTERNET PRIVACY: SUPERHIGHWAY PIRACY?

Ever wondered what information websites collect? A recent Georgetown Internet Privacy Policy Survey of the top 364 sites on the Web found:

92.9% collect some kind of personal information
90.9% collect an email address
81.3% collect a name
56.9% gather at least one type of demographic information
30.8% ask for the visitor's age group
25.3% ask the visitor's gender
56.6% collect both identifying and demographic information
6.6% ask for neither

Internet privacy is obviously a relative thing!
